10 week Course Camera Acting

10 WEEK COURSE CAMERA ACTING

During the 10 week Course Camera Acting you will be introduced to the most important aspects of camera acting in ten weekends. Have you always wanted to play in a feature film or series and do you have the ambition to become a film actor or actress? Then don’t wait any longer and realize your dreams and make a good start with our Preliminary training in Camera Acting.

We treat various acting techniques in a safe environment so that after completing the course you can work confidently in front of the camera. You learn to improvise, you take part in an audition and we treat text interpretation. Finally you act a scene for the camera on a film set.

The goal of the Camera Acting lessons is to give you a solid basis as an actor or actress in ten weekends. You will learn what it is like to play in front of the camera and also to look at yourself as an actor. But you start with the basics of acting, what does it actually mean? How can you bring text to life as an actor?

INTRODUCTION

You get to know the group you will be working with in the coming period to develop yourself as an actor. During the introduction we will go deeper into elementary playing lessons such as presenting yourself, camera acting, text interpretation and improvisation. You will also get an answer to the question: what does acting mean? What possibilities and different forms are there? How do you learn to think as an actor or actress? How can you empathize and what are the do’s and don’ts?

TEXT INTERPRETATION

Lines are an important part of acting but the usage of the lines is even more important because you can learn your lines so well, but what do you exactly do with it? How do you learn you lines by heart? What is really meant? A writer has written the scene with a clear purpose but can you also apply that as an actor? In this phase you learn everything about text comprehension and the handy ways to optimally prepare yourself for a scene.

ANALYZING SCENES

In this phase we focus on the analysis of a scene. What’s written and what can you make in terms of choices? Where are the different layers and how do you make sure you don’t constantly play the same scene?

You learn the basics of playing with strategies and goals. A character always has a goal in a scene but how do you discover such a goal when you analyse a scene? In this section, it’s all about learning how to view a scene from different perspectives and how a scene is arranged.

AUDITION

Auditions are often a stumbling block for an actor because a lot depends on it. During the preliminary training you take the first steps in auditing and castings. You learn to introduce yourself and feel comfortable during auditions. What are you waiting for when you have an audition? How can you prepare for an audition? And most importantly, what do you show during an audition? We’ll give you useful tips so you can participate in a casting in a relaxed way.

IMPROVISING

Improvisation is an essential part of acting and it is often underestimated. During improvisation it is the art to keep listening and reacting to your opponent and always go along with the story. If you improvise it is important to tell the story together with your co-actor and challenge each other. But how do you do this and what pitfalls are there in the improvisation play? By playing with your fellow students you learn how to improvise and how to keep telling the story.

CAMERA ACTING

The last part of the Introduction Course is “Camera Acting”. What is the difference between camera acting and acting on stage? How do you come across on camera and how do you learn to look at yourself as an actor without making a value judgement? It is important to learn to look at yourself and to become aware of your talents and points of attention. How can you make yourself feel at ease when you are in front of the camera? The camera sees everything and therefore also when you are nervous or not completely surrendering to the moment. During this last phase you will learn to play scenes for the camera for the first time so that you are ready to take the next step in your career as an actor.

1 week Speed Course Filmmaking

INTRODUCTION SPEED-COURSE FILMMAKING

The goal of the Speed-Course Filmmaking is to take the first steps into filmmaking and to produce a short movie with your classmates in a week-time. Whether you like operating a camera, acting, directing or editing: everything is covered in this Speed-Course!

You will be introduced to the different disciplines of filmmaking (both Fiction and Documentary), acting and editing as well. This way, you will get knowledge about everything and you will record your own short film.

For example: you go out with your fellow students and make a report of Amsterdam with our professional equipment. In addition, you are going to record a scene in which you either act, operate a camera or direct the scene.

SHOOTING

You will learn all the possibilities of the camera and you will record your first shots. Which shots do you have? What is the purpose of each shot? By practicing during the lessons you will quickly learn how to tell a story through film. You write a short plan and interview your classmates. Here you make use of the different camera shots you learned.

ACTING

In addition to filming and conducting interviews, you also become acquainted with acting. You will get various exercises, useful facts and tips and you will learn how to transform yourself into your role. How can you make the script come to live? What are good ways to learn scripts? After acquiring this knowledge, you are going to apply that to the scene.

If you don’t want to act, there is always a possibility to work as a director, sound(wo)man or camera(wo)man when the scenes are being recorded. We ensure that everyone has a job that suits them best.

DIRECTING

Besides directing actors you can also choose to direct a short item. You write a plan for this with the following points: What are you going to film? Who are you going to film and why? Which shots do you need? Are you going to film on a tripod or handheld? If you have finished your plan you can start filming in duo’s. This doesn’t have to be in the school, but can also be done somewhere nearby. If you are done, you return to Amsterdam Film School and you make sure all recorded material is safely stored on our workstations.

EDITING

In the first lessons of the course you were mainly focused in filming different situations. You have recorded an interview, a scene or an item. Now it’s time to see how all these shots turned out. How do you assemble all the material into a good film? You will get acquainted with editing and make your first version.

SHORT FILM

During the last phase of the course, you choose a discipline you liked the most and would like to learn more about. For example, you can record another scene, edit material or make more shots for your item. Eventually you make sure that you have a final film which you can present at the end of your course.

4 Week Screenwriting Course

ABOUT THE SCREENWRITING COURSE

In order to develop a scenario with a powerful narrative and authenticity in image and language, several steps have to be taken. In these workshop weeks we will focus on writing a synopsis and then a scenario for a short film. We will pay attention to techniques and structures, but we will mainly look for your way to create a clear story with a clear language in both the action and the dialogue.

Because you are working with a small group of participants in this workshop, there is room for a lot of individual attention for your project. Most of the material is applicable to every participant/student, but homework assignments, feedback and approach do not have to be.
In this intensive period you will get the personal attention to make your film idea concrete and to look for the right tone and atmosphere in your scenario. In this way, you can move on to the realization of your short film with a concrete plan.

OBJECTIVE

Participants have the ambition to write and/or direct a short film and have an idea in mind that needs further elaboration. In a short period of time the tools and skills of writing a scenario will be intensively examined and your personal writing style can be examined. This includes narrative structures, characters and intermediate steps such as synopsis and treatment means, but the goal remains a personal and necessary narrative. Sytske will also discuss in detail how to approach dialogues. And perhaps the most important part of the profession, rewriting.

The aim of this speed course is to concretize the scenario, the working method and the next steps, and to receive concrete feedback on the work done.

FOR WHO?

This workshop is for both experienced and novice filmmakers.
It is important that there is already a basis for your synopsis, so that you can make use of the feedback and suggestions of the teacher. This program is meant as a kickstart of your film plan, whether that is a whole new plan that you are excited about (and know all about), a plan for which you need a new insight or a final finishing touch before you start sharing it with external parties.
